Executive Summary

When Large Language Model (LLM) agents are tasked with diagnosing IT incidents and proposing GitOps remediations, the intuitive approach is to have the model directly author or patch version-controlled configuration files.

This paper evaluates that text-generation approach on real Kubernetes manifests and demonstrates that no text-generation strategy is safe for unattended automation: * Unified Diffs: Strict patching fails to apply almost entirely. When using tolerant tools like GNU patch, 96% of patches are applied, but roughly 1 in 7 (14–20%) are silently misapplied without generating an error signal. * Full-File Rewrites: Smaller models corrupt files entirely. While frontier models are usually accurate, they remain non-deterministic (silently dropping fields or editing neighboring lines on random runs) and incur a costly \(O(\text{file size})\) generation overhead per edit.

To solve this, the author introduces a system that cleanly separates the semantic decision (which resource, field, and value to modify) from the syntactic act of editing the file. The agent emits only a structured field-change intent, which a deterministic pipeline applies by mapping scalar exact character spans via YAML node positions. This guarantees minimal diffs, zero comment/formatting loss, and deterministic \(O(1)\) generation costs independent of the model.

Key Findings & Evaluation

Approach Reliability Risks & Failure Modes Computational Cost
Strict Diffs Extremely Low Almost never applies cleanly. \(O(\text{diff size})\)
Tolerant Patches (GNU) High application rate (96%), but unsafe Silent corruption: Misapplies 14–20% of changes without raising error signals. \(O(\text{diff size})\)
Full-File Rewrites (Small Models) Unsafe Frequently corrupts file syntax and structure. \(O(\text{file size})\)
Full-File Rewrites (Frontier Models) Mostly correct, but non-deterministic Prone to stochastic errors (silently dropping fields or altering neighboring elements). \(O(\text{file size})\)
Proposed Method (KubeAstra) Deterministic & Safe Preserves comments, structure, and formatting; fail-closed contract. \(O(1)\)

The Proposed Solution: KubeAstra

Instead of asking the LLM to output markdown code blocks or file diffs, KubeAstra shifts the paradigm:

  1. Structured Intent Generation: The LLM agent outputs exclusively a structured JSON intent containing the target resource identifiers (kind, name), the target field, and the new value.
  2. Deterministic Indexing & Spans: A deterministic backend pipeline indexes manifests, parses the YAML to locate the exact character span of the target scalar using parser node position marks, and performs a direct text replacement.
  3. Fail-Closed Contract: Because the file is never re-serialized from an abstract syntax tree (AST), existing formatting and comments are preserved unconditionally, resulting in a minimal, human-auditable pull request diff.

Note: The scope of this contribution is strictly focused on the faithful application of a known configuration change. Determining whether the change itself is correct remains the responsibility of human pull request review.
